Experiential Learning Experiential learning is a critical component of EARTH´s educational model. Students intern at a company or organization whose work relates to the economic, environmental and social aspects of rural development. Whenever possible, EARTH places students in internships that match their area of professional interest. Through internships, students are exposed to actual business situations, cultural diversity and the socioeconomic realities of their home countries or other nations.
In recent years, student interns have worked in environmental conservation, animal husbandry, crop production, organic agriculture, rural development, technical assistance, post-harvest technology, crop and food processing, product marketing and agribusiness. During the course of the internship EARTH representatives travel to the host organizations to evaluate the program and assess each student´s performance.
Highlights of the Internship Program In a typical year, approximately 71 percent of students complete internships in the private sector; 14 percent work with non-governmental organizations; 10 percent work with universities; and 4 percent work with government entities. Students have completed internships in more than 30 different countries, including many outside of Latin America such as Canada, East Timor, England, Germany, Israel, Kenya, Lebanon, Spain, Thailand, Uganda and the United States.
“Since 1993 my company has hosted interns from EARTH, and without exception they have been extraordinary young leaders. Their dedication to the future of sustainable agriculture, the values they display on the job, and their commitment to community set these young people apart.” —George Todd, President, KALSEC (Kalamazoo Spice and Extract Company), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA
